Pressure Treated Pine Options for Fences

You’re going to need a fence. But which one? If you’re like most people, you’re not sure how to pick the best type of fence for your yard and property. That’s why we created this guide for all of our potential clients who are looking into fencing options in the Ann Arbor area. In this article, we will be discussing the two types of pressure treated pines that are commonly used for fences: Red Pine and Southern Yellow.

Both types of pines are sturdy and reliable, but they do have their own unique benefits that you should be aware of before making your final decision. Here is a breakdown of each type of pine and what you can expect from it:

RED PRESSURE TREATED PINE

Red pine is a great choice if your yard is exposed to direct sunlight for the majority of the day. However, red pine does not do well in damp conditions with foliage build up, and it has a tendency to rot quickly. Additionally, red pine does not come with a warranty that protects against termite damage or rot. This leaves the homeowner responsible for any fence slat replacement.

Although red pine is not the best option for every situation, it can be a great choice for a privacy fence if you are looking to keep your yard sunny. Talk to a quality fence contractor to see if red pine is a good fit for your home.

SOUTHERN YELLOW PRESSURE TREATED PINE

If you are looking for a fence that will last for many years and is resistant to moisture and termites, then Southern Yellow Pine is the best option. It is available at most big box stores, so it is easy to find, and comes with a 15-year warranty against rot and termite damage. Southern Yellow Pine is also a good option if your yard has a combination of sunlight and moist leaf build-up, as it holds up better in direct sunlight than Red Pressure Treated Pine.

So, if you are looking for a beautiful and durable fence that will last for many years, Southern Yellow Pine is the best option. It is available at most big box stores, so it is easy to find, and comes with a 15-year warranty against rot and termite damage.

FENCE MAINTENANCE

If you are in the market for a new wood fence, installing one can be a major investment. But there is maintenance to think about as well. If you’re going with a pressure-treated wood fence, it will need to dry out before staining or sealing. You should wait at least 1 month (or up to 6 months) after installation before treating your new fence. If you live in an area that has less rain than most, or if your area is experiencing a dry spell, then waiting time may not be necessary.

In terms of maintenance while the weather cooperates: keep weeds away from the base of your posts by mowing close around them; trim any branches that may be overhanging the fence; and hose down the fence every once in a while to clean it (and help it weather). If you live in an area with snow, brush off the snow as soon as possible after a storm to avoid any damage.

Then, when it’s clean and dry, apply a weatherproof stain or sealant with a manufacturer’s warranty to be sure you are protected from any problems. Regular maintenance like this will help your fence look great for years to come.
